Rambling Thoughts from Old Ma

You know, I've been reflecting on how life is this endless journey of learning. It’s amazing how there’s always something new to uncover, no matter how much we know. Lately, that’s been brought home in a very tangible way. Old Pa, FarmHer Raye and I took on a pretty big project—building a little insulated she-shed that can be used year round. Neither of us had ever tackled anything quite like it. We've built plenty of utilitarian livestock sheds but not one designed to be cute, cozy and comfortable for the human kind of critters.  It has really stretched us mentally and creatively. Each exhilarating step of the way, we had to learn, adapt, and more than not just figure things out as we went along.

With the Skill Builder Series, starting up, I’ve been thinking about how exciting it is to dive into new skills and hobbies. It’s not just about gaining new knowledge but about the joy of discovery and the satisfaction that comes with each small achievement. It’s a reminder that learning isn’t confined to a classroom or a structured lesson—it’s all around us, in every moment of our daily lives.

Even here on the farm, where life can seem routine, there’s always room for growth. Just like with our she-shed project, the Lord, the Maker of all things, weaves lessons into our lives in the most unexpected ways. It’s about seeing the opportunities for growth in the everyday tasks and challenges we face.

“The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge; the ears of the wise seek it out.” - Proverbs 18:15

So, as we dive into this Skill Builder Series, I’m looking forward to the new adventures and lessons that await us. If you’re feeling a spark of curiosity, come join us. There’s always room for another soul eager to learn and grow.

I’m starting and stopping so many times as I write- the words that don't want to come. It’s so impossibly hard to put my thoughts into words that I’ve even moved outside to look at the pasture, I've ventured to the barn and even back into the house. What do we do when love turns bittersweet? When the gentle sway of a cow’s tail reminds us of joy, yet whispers of loss linger in the air? LadyBelle, our beloved firstborn, graced our farm with her presence, her gentle spirit and sweet nature surrounding us like a warm embrace. She recently calved, yet the silence of her lost calf echoes louder than the gentle moo that greets us each morning. Four gallons a day. Milk that flows like cherished memories—creamy butter, rich cheese, and homemade ice cream that dances on the tongue. Tonight my heart is shattered into a million tiny pieces. How do you even say goodbye?  Today i had to make the choice to love Thistle more than I love myself, knowing that my heart would never, not ever be the same.  Thistle was not just a pig but a teacher of quiet wisdom, wrapped in bristled, curled hide. She was the matriarch, the heart of the herd, with eyes that saw through the seasons of my soul. For nearly a decade, she walked beside me, her presence grounding me in the land we shared. She was best in show not once but  twice—a reflection of her strength, her grace. But those ribbons pale in comparison to the lessons she imparted in the stillness of nights in the barn, early morning feedings, and the every day walks that dominate farm life.
