Bovine Intervention

This little Punkin was born early and her little body and systems were just not quite ready for the outside world.

She was only hours old when she took her first ride in the back seat of the truck up to our vet. The prognosis was grim. "She might make it, but likely not." And with that we were sent home with an IV drip and very little hope.

But here's the back story... Some of you will remember DaisyBelle. The first baby cow we had here at the farm. Those same words, and even worse were uttered about her. And she went on to live many years filling hearts to overflow. When we did finally lose her part of the heartbeat of the farm was gone.

This little Punkin was born exactly four years, nearly to the hour that Daisy went down for the last time never to get up again. We lost Daisy about 24 hours after she went down,  half of Sagle gathered around working in vain to save her. Over the next weeks people came with flowers and stories trying to come to terms with the fact that our happy heifer was truly gone.

The grim outlook for little Punkin only steeled our resolve and we determined to not let her slip away, to not give up no matter how bleak. We jumped into round the clock care. We researched studies, papers, and experimental therapies. We tried all we could try and then some. We just kept after it.  We're farmers. Farmers don't give up- they get to work!

And little by little the baby that wouldn't suckle, took her first sips, the baby that couldn't make sounds started to moo, the tail that wouldn't wiggle began to wag. The floppy, noodle legs began to grow stronger and more coordinated each time we lifted her.

And at three days old, this little "no hope" calf took her first unsteady steps. Because what the grim prognosis didn't take into account is that she has  her very own angel, a little bovine intervention to help her along.

As hope began to take root, we continued to offer up prayers.  And we will never stop pouring out praise.

And we just love this little baby cow with everything we have in us because sometimes love really is all you need.
